In theory, if we were to reach the center of the earth, we would have millions of years of energy to cover all our energy needs. Unfortunately, we are not able (yet) to drill to the center of the earth to extract that energy. As such, we just drill 2-4 km deep to extract heat from the earth, which in some places is enough even produce electricity while in others is good enough to heat several thousands of houses. Whereas the public opinion drives the incentive to look for more sustainable forms of energy, the investment for a geothermal plant can be very risky and expensive.
It remains critical that the involved companies are not only experienced and competent, but committed to deliver cost efficient solutions that are aligned to the interest of these customers. Horticulturism in many countries largely depend on heat to grow up their products such as paprikas and tomatoes. Traditionally the heat is generated by burning natural gas. However, geopolitical tensions are having an important effect on the gas price. Through an unstable gas price, the energy costs for these companies remains volatile and effects their financial profitability.
Geothermal energy represents an opportunity for energy independence and food security. Although drilling a geothermal well can be the same than drilling an oil & gas well, one unsuccessful well for horticulturists can have a big financial impact for instance if the drilling equipment is lost in the hole or if the length of the drilling phase escalates in time. So it is important to review the track record of the drilling companies, which might not always be the cheapest, but can guarantee results on time and within the budget.
